The Paper Magician Review Spoliers

Ceony Twill arrives at the cottage of Magician Emery Thane with a broken heart. Having graduated at the top of her class from the Tagis Praff School for the Magically Inclined, Ceony is assigned an apprenticeship in paper magic despite her dreams of bespelling metal. And once she’s bonded to paper, that will be her only magic…forever.
Yet the spells Ceony learns under the strange yet kind Thane turn out to be more marvelous than she could have ever imagined—animating paper creatures, bringing stories to life via ghostly images, even reading fortunes. But as she discovers these wonders, Ceony also learns of the extraordinary dangers of forbidden magic.
An Excisioner—a practitioner of dark, flesh magic—invades the cottage and rips Thane’s heart from his chest. To save her teacher’s life, Ceony must face the evil magician and embark on an unbelievable adventure that will take her into the chambers of Thane’s still-beating heart—and reveal the very soul of the man.
My Thoughts: I was given this book as a review copy on Netgalley. I'm not entirely sure why this book called out to me but I am so glad it did! This book was imaginative and unlike anything I have ever read before. When I started reading this book I was so upset for Ceony. That she had done all that work and even graduated in a year just have her dream of becoming a Smelter Magician ripped out from under her. Then as I kept reading I found out that she could read books and have images come out of pages for a few seconds. I didn't feel so bad for her after that lol I was actually a little jealous! This book just grabbed me and didn't let go, I couldn't stop reading it! I felt every emotion Ceony did and when Thane had his heart ripped out right in front of her I cried a little. Lira is seriously scary and I mean that in the most respective way possible. You have to admire her as an enemy. She beautiful and fierce and she can enchant the flesh. Plus the way she just bursts into Thane's house even with the wards he has up and starts throwing blood around before she rips his heart is just cool as hell. And I know what you're all thinking what can paper magic do against that kind of power well Ceony definitely finds out that paper isn't as harmless as some people think it is. When Lira traps her inside of Thane's heart she learns more about her teacher than she thought she ever would. She walks through the different chambers of his heart which are different parts of Thane. His hopes and his doubts and everything that makes him who he is. That was so imaginative and well written that I could imagine myself inside his heart. And whatever Ceony did the make Lira never move again was seriously impressive. I'm not sure if you can tell that I loved this book maybe it needs more exclamation points!!! This book definitely left me wanting more and I can't wait to start reading The Glass Magician.
